Evel Knievel’s Snake River Canyon Jump
Official Ticket and press photo of the launchpad setup. (1974)
The Steam-powered bike Knievel named the “Sky Cycle” is being hoisted up onto the launchpad, where it was jettisoned, and a parachute was to be deployed on the far side of the canyon to lower the bike to the other side. The “Sky Cycle” was designed by a Navy engineer, and cost approximately $150, 000 to build.
The jump was not successful due to forceful head winds, as well as premature deployment of the parachute. But, Knievel walked away from the crash having sustained only minor injury.
